Personally, I prefer ASCP by Superutils to speed up podcasts for listening them on my gadgets. And besides Librivox, Podio Books is also a great source of free audio books.

I can't quite give up physical books, so the compromise is that I buy hard copies for those that are by current favorite authors. E-books are for taking chances or stuff that I wouldn't necessarily feel like I'd need on the shelf or read more than once (ie., an old Elmore Leonard novel or THE HUNGER GAMES series).

LOL, it's been years since I've done much listening with the iPod, but I now do most of my listening with my Android phone using an app that almost doubles the speed (vs. the iPod's meager 33% increase). Trust me, you'll get used to it. But if you really want to change, it's in the settings somewhere I think under Audiobooks or something? I'd google it and look on Apple's site, sorry I can't be more helpful, I can't even find my iPod now since I really don't use it anymore...

I lost over 40 pounds when I stopped eating WF prepared foods and not only is it canola oil, it is SLATHERED in the oil.
In conversations wt the prepared foods staff at different locations, I have surmised (and staff have reluctantly confirmed I'm right) that the oil slathering is to allow the food to be kept longer, weighs more so more $$ for WF, and they run their profits at WF by the section, not the whole store. So the prepared foods is responsible for their profit and loss so OIL is what makes the profit margin.

"i completely agree. it is biochemical individuality. this is what we have to take into account. everyone has a different metabolism and metabolic needs."

This is completely false. Human metabolism varies about as much as metabolism amongst pigeons.

I recently got an iPod video (yes, generation 5), I converted with Videora because that was before I found this article. I can hear the videos but it appears to just show a random screenshot or something. Also, is it supposed to show up so small, and is there some way to use the full screen for video?

Hi Kelly,

Generally I would suggest butter and olive oil for items you don't have to cook at super-high heat. If you need to go pretty hot, the best choice would probably be coconut oil, but it can't be the virgin stuff, it needs to be expeller pressed to the point where there are no bits of actual coconut in it, like the virgin stuff has. Having it slightly more refined ups the smoke point considerably. Generally you want to avoid cooking with oils that have a considerable amount of polyunsaturated fats. These are generally less stable, even if some have higher smoke points. Another fat that has a higher smoke point is rendered suet, but this is not as easy to find. Ghee (clarrified butter) would be another fine choice, but it tends to be pricey so if you need to use a lot of it, it can get prohibitive...

So, which oil do you suggest for fry or saute? Olive oil has a low smoking point and breaks down too quickly when heated. Peanut oil? Coconut oil? Butter doesn't work well for stir fry. I read that canola oil was healthier than vegetable oil, so that is what I have been using, but wondering what could be better.

I'm desperate for an automated batch flavor of speeding up playback. Why, oh why, didn't Apple support speed selection on podcasts?! I'm currently manually moving all audio podcasts to audio books.
Foobar: fantastic tool. I used this with soundtouch until I broke down and got a Nano. No command line interface, so I can't automate it through doppler.
I currently use Mp3Tag-- and awsome free tool (www.mp3tag.de) to remove the podcast tag then import folder to iTunes, then move to audio books. A lot of steps. I wish Mp3Tag could be command line driven. The developer hasn't been convinced this would be a popular feature so doesn't want to invest.
Sox: High potential for my automation goal. Con: I can't find/build the LAME extension to set the output format in MP3.
Well, that's the route I've taken. I'm still not where I'd like to be but I can feel the potential to get there. I love listening to podcasts and audio books at high speed.

Perhaps it's useful for those who can only allot a little of their time listening to audio books. As for me, it's more enjoyable and satisfying when the audio is played in it's normal pace. But, it totally depends on a person's preferences.
Anyway, thanks for sharing this info Levi =))
