XM Delphi Rebate

Just got the latest XM Radio newsletter and there’s a $30 rebate for the Delphi Skyfi Receiver. I have this one and paid $130 for it, so you can now get it for just $100. I like it in that it is modular - you can plug it into your car (with the separate car kit), into your stereo (with the separate kit), or into a Delphi boom-box. I have the car kit and the boom-box, which I keep at work, so I’m able to listen all day at work, then take it home in the car. Haven’t gotten a separate boom-box for the house yet, but I have taken the boom-box at work home a few times.

The boom-box and the kits each cost $100, so it’s initially not as cheap as you think, but the monthly fee is very reasonable, when you consider paying $40+ for cable each month! When I moved in with Jessica we got cable so that I could watch The Sopranos, but after a few $80 DC cable bills, we downgraded from digital, and even the non-digital was still $50/month and didn’t have some basic channels. Plus, after Christmas, we just weren’t watching a whole lot of TV so we ended up just ditching cable altogether in January and since then I think I’ve watched a total of maybe 20 hours of TV - most of it news coverage during the War in Iraq. So anyway, the other nice thing about XM, other than it having a huge variety of music to choose from, is that it has audio feeds from FOX News, CNN, Headline News, and BBC to name a few. Unfortunately no NPR, but who knows, maybe that will come eventually. So it is kind of like having a cable fix for news junkies but without the huge cable bill - and without the picture!

XM Actually lowered the price for monthly subscriptions from $11.99 to $9.99 not too long ago and added a “family plan” where you get up to 4 more subscriptions for $6.99. Not a bad deal, I think, if you listen to the radio a lot. Heck, even if you don’t, it’s the cost of a lunch one day per month! Compare that to the $50-100 bill you’re going to get from a cable or satellite company. I know, those come with pictures, but you also can’t take your cable box with you across country!
